Patent granted for recovering critical minerals from black mass

BatX’s second recent patent covers a proprietary process for recovering critical minerals from the black mass of spent lithium-ion batteries — the intermediate that sits between mechanical recycling and battery-grade outputs.

Black mass is where battery recycling becomes a materials business. After safe discharge, dismantling, and mechanical processing, spent cells yield a concentrated intermediate rich in the metals that cathode manufacturers need.

The Indian Patent Office has granted BatX Energies a patent for a proprietary process developed in-house for the recovery of critical minerals from that black mass stream.

High-purity recovery is not a single unit operation. It is a sequence of leaching, separation, purification, and crystallisation steps that must stay consistent under real feedstock variability — different chemistries, states of health, and impurity profiles.

Process patents mark progress, but they are not the destination. For BatX, each grant reinforces the same operating thesis: India needs indigenous, plant-proven recovery technology if circular battery materials are going to compete with virgin imports on quality and reliability.

Beyond Limitations remains the bar — engineering discipline first, then scale.
